The Syrians handed Lange s body to the Lebanese army which passed it to the Marines at 3 30 p m Lange s bombardier navigator Lt Robert O Goodman remains a prisoner of war in Syria and is well treated according to Damascus officials. Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir pledged retaliation for the bus bombing that killed four Israelis and wounded 46 in Jerusalem.

About 1,800 Marines who survived the Beirut bombing returned to the United States aboard the USS Austin. The ship carried 600 to 800 members of the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit and docked at the North Carolina State Ports Authority terminal at 9 a.m. A large crowd greeted them with welcoming signs, bands, flags, and yellow ribbons.

Jets collide on takeoff in Madrid killing 104
In heavy fog at Barajas Airport two jets collided during takeoff.
