A Beechcraft 18 cargo plane piloted by Jack Harvey of Ardmore collased on landing at Midland Regional Airport, blocking both major runways for about an hour. Pearl Harbor attack still echoes in memorials and scars
Forty years after the December 7 1941 assault on Oahu the Pearl Harbor episode remains etched in memory and on sites like the Arizona hull the Hickam Field scars and the Schofield Barracks library. The surprise strike by 353 Japanese planes killed 2341 Americans wounded 1143 and left 68 civilians dead. The Arizona remains a tomb for 1177 sailors while a gleaming white memorial now marks the sunken battleship. Japanese losses included 29 planes and 64 men. The attack helped spur US mobilization in World War II and continues to fuel debate over Roosevelt s awareness of the raid.
