C5A Failure May Be Due To Stripping
Washington AP report cites defense consultant Dr. Frederic Scherer of the University of Michigan who testifies to Senate Armed Services Committee that Lockheed stripped weight from the C5A to meet a 318000 pound unrefueled weight target. He says redesign shaved metal from structural members using lightweight substitutes and chemical milling, costing about 120 million dollars and possibly reducing performance.
