A lawsuit and a city case argue California's 1977 law restricting marriage to a man and a woman violates equal protection. Plaintiffs from National Center for Lesbian Rights ACLU and Lambda Legal say the ban amounts to gender discrimination. San Francisco contends the law limits no legitimate city purpose.
About 400 protesters gathered outside the Star in Columbus to demand a recount of the presidential election in Ohio. They cited irregularities including discrepancies in punch-card vote totals and a computer glitch that added 3,893 votes for Bush in Gahanna. Protesters urged transparency and accused observers of rigging claims.
In Hobart Indiana Mary Anderson listed her late father’s ghost on eBay to comfort six year old Collin who fears the grandfather’s spirit. The listing titled This isn’t a joke drew more than 34 bids with a top offer of 78 dollars and included her father’s metal walking cane for the winning bidder. Proceeds fund a special present for Collin and she asks the winner to write a letter to the boy about the ghost’s presence.
