Clinton announces new federal water standards
President Clinton unveiled new federal drinking water standards at Fort Adams Rhode Island with Narragansett Bay as a backdrop. He announced higher filtration and monitoring requirements, plus $775 million in low interest loans and $93.8 million for state programs to help communities upgrade treatment facilities. Most systems must comply by December 2001 with smaller ones by 2003, and costs are projected lower than $2 to the typical household.
