Greyhound Lines and the Amalgamated Transit Union reached a tentative settlement to end a month-long strike. The agreement, which included pay cuts sought by Greyhound, requires ratification by Dec. 20. About 7,500 drivers and 5,200 other workers would remain off the job until ratified.
Crescent Oklahoma oil field equipment salesman Joe Robert McDonald faced an aggravated sexual abuse charge in Ector County. After 13 months of investigation, medical tests showed different blood types, leading to charges being dropped. He criticized the police and DA for shoddy handling and delays, saying the system failed to reveal the truth promptly.
A one day drill team competition drew about 30 high schools from Texas and New Mexico. Participants were cadets from Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps units.
Israeli jets bombed guerrilla bases in Lebanon's central mountains in retaliation for attacks on Israeli troops. The U N Security Council approved a plan to evacuate Yasser Arafat and his PLO loyalists from Tripoli using ships flying the Lebanese flag, then the U N flag in international waters. Fourteen planes hit Bhamdoun and Safar targets while reports said one Israeli soldier was killed and another wounded in Nabatiyeh amid ongoing clashes.
North of Dallas Fort Worth farms breed and train cutting show and racing horses as breeders from other states relocate for the growing industry. Ranch owner Gail Cooper notes the area as the nations third largest breeding operation outside Kentucky and expects pari mutuel betting in Texas someday.
