Texas farmer keeps horses through drought losses
Cruz did not lose his field but skipped planting, replacing crops with expensive alfalfa and horse feed. He spends about 600 dollars monthly to feed six horses as drought slashes 60 percent of local cotton acres, while his daughter Maggie notes horses also support the family and bring racing winnings. The Plains Cotton Growers note 2.3 million of 4.5 million cotton acres likely lost across 41 counties. OM drought map link provided.
