Tower defends Texas availability amid national energy talks
In Odessa, Sen. John Tower responded to challenger Bob Krueger's charge of a closed Washington office. He said his 17 years in Texas prove the door is open and emphasized the Energy Conference Committee report on natural gas pricing as immediate area in interest. Tower noted a coalition of consumer and producer state senators and aiming for a barebones bill with conservation and emergency allocation authority. He predicted White House pressure to back the conference report and planned a Midland luncheon and news conference at the Holiday Inn.

It analyzes how the current law penalizes single parents and those not itemizing deductions, arguing the old system pushed some toward nonmarital living arrangements.
