Navy commissions destroyer honoring Momsen in Panama City
The Navy's newest destroyer named for late Vice Adm. Charles Swede Momsen is commissioned with an inaugural crew including his great great grandson Petty Officer 2nd Class Andrew Hailey. Hailey joined three years ago after learning a ship would be named for his forebear who led the rescue of 33 men from the sunken Squalus. Hailey, 30, gathers photos aboard the USS Momsen and briefs crew as he balances family legacy with his own path. Momsen pioneered the Momsen Lung and helped test it, and he developed a diving bell used to rescue Squalus survivors in 1939. The ship will homeport in Everett, Washington, in October.
