Ten legislators begin compromise talks to resolve House and Senate budget differences before the special session ends. Gov. White may call a second 30 day session if a solution is not reached by Sept. 4. Uncertainty centers on higher education funding and tax proposals.
The Associated Press reports the Senate members on the HB 1 conference committee are Sens. John Montford of Lubbock, Grant Jones of Temple, Ray Farabee of Wichita Falls, Kent Caperton of Bryan, and Bob McFarland of Arlington. The House members are Reps. James Rudd of Brownfield, Bill Hollowell of Grand Saline, Mike Toomey of Houston, Frank Madia of San Antonio, and Jim McWilliams of Marshall.
Midland Regional Airport manager Victor White called Frontier Airlines bankruptcy filing disastrous for the small airport. Frontier has ceased operations and is seeking Chapter 11 protection after losing about 1 million dollars daily. With Frontier space tied up for 60 days, airport capacity will shrink as Transtar exits.
Newly released documents show a 42000 pound hydrogen bomb fell from a bomber near Albuquerque 29 years ago. The unarmed Mark 17 detonated its non nuclear explosives on impact 42 miles south of Kirtland AFB. No injuries. crater formed. minor radioactive traces found.
29 year old Army lieutenant Karyn Lacceo abducted by two Louisiana prison escapees was released in El Paso and drove to Pecos before notifying authorities. Police say she is tired, in shock, and has not eaten or slept. FBI and state authorities are interviewing her as they pursue the suspects.
Brenda Gaye Rae a former Ector County data processing programmer testified by deposition in a $6 million whistleblower suit filed by Tana Stewart Perry. Rae said she paid about 2210 for a Sperry Univac computer and 409 for a printer with a check made payable to Holden's private firm Pioneer Data Systems and that the gear was for Rae's church First United Pentecostal. Judge Jan Fisher said county workers may buy Sperry equipment and added there was no fault in county or Holden purchases. Rae also testified about missing county computers printers and invoices.
