California vies for new space industry
California lawmakers push a bill to shield space travel firms from most liability for passenger injuries or deaths, aligning with last year’s Virgin Galactic protections. Supporters say incentives are needed to attract a booming $200 billion sector as Texas, Florida and others court firms. opponents warn safety standards must not be lowered. Virgin Galactic has begun powered test flights and plans broader testing and passenger trips in the near future, citing rising demand and investor interest.

Yosemite moves to protect giant sequoias from Rim Fire
In Groveland California park officials clear brush and lay sprinklers to shield Tuolumne and Merced groves as the Rim Fire roars along Yosemite National Park’s northern edge. About three dozen giant sequoias are involved while evacuations are underway nearby. Park spokesman Scott Gediman says the trees are crucial symbols of the park system. The Rim Fire, starting in Stanislaus National Forest, is only 5 percent contained after a week, with 2,600 firefighters and aircraft aiding efforts and temperatures rising this weekend.
