Navy probes collision as 7th Fleet searches for missing sailors
The United States Navy ordered a broad investigation into the Pacific-based 7th Fleet after the USS John S. McCain collided with an oil tanker near Singapore, leaving 10 sailors missing and several injured. Credited with coordinating joint searches, vessels and aircraft from the US, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia scoured the area while four sailors were evacuated for non life threatening injuries. The incident follows a deadly collision in June between the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship off Japan, prompting Admiral John Richardson to pause operations and launch an in depth review of fleet performance, training, and career progression with input from the inspector general and safety centers.
