Teens see marijuana as safe as drug use rises
A government survey shows 11.4 percent of 12 to 17 year olds used an illicit drug in the past month, up from 9 percent in 1996. Marijuana was the drug of choice at 9.4 percent, while heroin use among 12 to 17 year olds remained at 0.2 percent. Precursors indicate 3.9 million teens tried heroin for the first time in 1996, up from 2.2 million in 1995. Health official Donna Shalala ties the rise to a belief marijuana is not dangerous, urging parents to stress its risks on learning and memory. The survey sampled 24,500 people in homes nationwide.
