Trade deficit dips in June as exports rise
The Commerce Department reports a June deficit of 37.2 billion dollars, down 1.8 percent from May. Exports climbed 1.7 percent to 82 billion, led by corn, semiconductors, and aircraft, while imports rose 0.5 percent to 119.2 billion, with consumer goods hitting a record 26.2 billion. Analysts see optimism for a continued export boost amid a weaker dollar, though the annual deficit remains large and growth slowed in Q2.

Pentagon postpones test of missile defense system
The Defense Department's Missile Defense Agency delayed a Saturday test after discovering nozzle seal issues on a two stage booster of the three stage interceptor. The test would have aimed to knock down enemy intercontinental missiles with ground launched rockets. Two prior tests failed but four tests earlier knocked out a dummy warhead more than 140 miles above the Pacific. The program costs about 100 million per test and plans include a permanent Alaska test site within four years. Bush administration officials argue for defenses against long range missiles from North Korea, while critics warn about cost and uncertain technology. Secretary Rumsfeld and Lt Gen Kadish will meet President Bush to discuss missile defense.
