Gene variation may explain severe West Nile illness
Washington AP scientists link a gene variation to higher West Nile virus susceptibility in mice. BALB/c mice died after infection, while others showed resistance. Researchers call the variant the West Nile gene, noting it blocks protective proteins and may guide drug development. NIH officials say findings advance vaccine and drug research amid 251 U.S. cases and 11 deaths.
