Immigrant abuse case expands as more officers arrested
Two more officers were arrested in the Brooklyn Louima case as the suit for 55 million dollars against the city and police department was announced. U S Attorney Zachary Carter said a civil rights probe would examine patterns of brutality and possible broader corruption within the precincts. Louima, a 30 year old security guard, said he was sodomized with a plunger during an arrest, faced threats to his family, and remained hospitalized with a torn colon. His lawyer Sanford Rubinstein said the civil action would seek 55 million dollars. Two officers, Justin Volpe and Charles Schwarz, were previously arrested on state charges. New arrests included Thomas Wiese and Thomas Bruder on assault and weapon charges connected to the beating, with Wiese facing prior civilian complaints. Louima was arrested after a disorderly conduct incident outside a Brooklyn nightclub, and 18 officers have been disciplined at the 70th Precinct. Police Commissioner Safir vowed to fire those withholding information. Mayor Giuliani planned a city task force to address brutality.
