Odessa chronicles capture UT Permian Basin birth and era events
In 1969 Odessa witnesses the UT Permian Basin bill passing the Senate 23 to 5 and being signed by Gov. Preston Smith, selecting a tract in northeast Odessa for the campus. Midland College forms later that year, while local history also recalls a jailbreak case, Miss Teen America Debbie Patton, Alfred Wilson’s Medal of Honor, and the opening of the Family YMCA. Notable national milestones include Apollo 11 moon landing, Woodstock, Nixon's inauguration, and the Jets' Super Bowl III victory.
