Union Pacific removes Cargo Road crossing in Odessa
Union Pacific Railway removed the Cargo Road crossing after Ector County commissioners voted to close it on July 11. Temporary barriers will be replaced by permanent ones in about a month. The crossing had 81 cars stuck since 2009 and 14 vehicle train collisions in the last decade. The $20,000 removal cost was covered entirely by Union Pacific. Jaguars Gold Club Odessa filed suit alleging collusion to close the road without public input. No injuries were reported despite drivers attempting to cross after closure.
