Health care gap between blacks and whites narrows
Boston research from three federally funded studies shows racial gaps closing for simple and cheap treatments such as mammograms and diabetics eye exams while persistent disparities remain for complex care like heart surgery and knee replacements. The Harvard led analysis of 1.5 million patients in 183 plans from 1997 to 2003 found notable gains, notably beta blocker use, with 93 percent of blacks meeting standards vs 94 percent of whites.

Racial and gender gaps in high cost medical treatments
Findings show little racial gap for aspirin and beta blockers with small differences between white men and women. Whites fare better in vessel clearing angioplasties and related imaging, while gaps narrow for angioplasties but persist for abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, CABG, back surgeries, and joint replacements. Disparities widen in diabetes blood sugar control and heart attack cholesterol management.
