Perry signs education budget scraps expected teacher raise
Gov. Rick Perry signed a rewritten education budget that eliminates the projected 2.76 percent raise for about 8,000 Texas teachers earning the state minimum. The change, blamed on the Legislature, ends a measure that would have boosted the minimum salary schedule after lawmakers raised per student spending. TEA notes no increase unless a new bill passes in a later session, while lawmakers acknowledge failure to reform school funding this session.
