Hidden Pond archives reveal U S covert network in early Cold War
In a long-hidden history uncovered by the AP, the Pond organization operated 40 chief agents and 600+ sources across 32 countries from WWII through its 13-year span. Led by Col. John V. Grombach, it used front companies and off-book funding to carry out cryptography, espionage, and daring operations including the Budapest escape of Zoltan Pfeiffer and family in 1947.
