Federal judge orders Conrail workers to return
A federal judge ordered 3,400 Conrail maintenance of way employees to return to work hours after a walkout shut the freight railroad. The temporary restraining order halts the strike pending a hearing on its legality. The BMWE said it would obey while unions cited disappointment. Freight shipments across Conrail routes stalled as auto parts and food shipments faced delays. Conrail serves multiple states and Canada with about 23,500 employees and 11,000 miles of track.
