Budget negotiators slice food stamps
Washington AP reports House and Senate negotiators tentatively cut $2 billion from food stamps through 1985 while stalling on pension reductions and postponing price support talks. The change would keep annual benefits for a four person family just under inflation, with about $2.50 less for a family of four. Negotiators also moved toward paying farmers to idle wheat, feed grain, rice and cotton land, and raised the 1983 loan rates for wheat and corn. A plan to require lump sum FHA mortgage insurance payments was agreed. Republicans pressed for a Friday end to talks ahead of a recess. The pension fight centers on capping annual cost of living increases at 4 percent through 1985, a move House Democrats oppose.

He cited prior Social Security taxes to compare impacts and denied flip flopping or retaliation against GOP critics.
