Inflation at wholesale level slows with a 0.1 percent July rise and a 0.7 percent drop over seven months. Food prices fall for the third straight month while energy costs rise modestly. Yearly wholesale gains ease to 1.4 percent, the smallest in 15 years, with meat and vegetables price trends noted. Odessa High cheerleaders lead Ireland Elementary pep squad during a school clinic.
A USDA survey pegged the drought hit corn crop at 5.24 billion bushels and soybeans at 1.84 billion, based on Aug. 1 farmer reports. Hot, dry weather since then worsened losses, with analysts projecting lower near term prices for pork and beef feed but a 3 to 5 percent rise in grocery prices next spring. Ralph Shell of Refco noted yields at about 100 bushels per acre for corn and 29.7 for soybeans.
Monahans City Council approved designating portions of the city as blighted to clear the way for a commercial revenue bond program aimed at spurring business growth and job creation. The Ward County Industrial Development Corp. will collect applications from firms seeking bonds for new construction, with state approval required.
Two passenger trains collided head on near Villa Ahumada injuring about 135 people none killed. One train from Juarez to Mexico City and a Chihuahua City to Juarez train crumbled like an accordion. Students from Los Angeles escaped injury and an American passenger, Louise Hernandez, sustained minor injuries.
An explosion at Lourdes destroyed a bronze Pontius Pilate statue along the Stations of the Cross near the basilica. Debris flew 500 feet. no injuries reported. A group calling itself Stop the Priests claimed responsibility, citing anti clerical action ahead of the pope's visit. Authorities were alerted and security plans under review.
