UT Permian Basin Faces 16.9 Percent Budget Cut

The Texas House Appropriations Committee recommends a 16.9 percent cut for the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in fiscal 1987. Sul Ross State University would lose 15.3 percent, Odessa and Midland Colleges about 9 percent. UTB officials note Gov. White proposed a smaller cut and say the final decision remains to be enacted by the Legislature.

Rig count shows fourth weekly rise to 734 rigs

The national oil and gas rig count climbs to 734, up 13 from 721, per Hughes Tool Co. data. Last year at this time only 1,928 rigs were active, with July lows near 663 and 672. Since December, over 1,000 rigs idle as prices slumped from 995 to a low near 9 dollars.

Gas prices to rise briefly amid OPEC move

Los Angeles motorists may face higher gasoline costs in coming days as OPEC tightens oil supplies. The Lundberg Survey shows a 1.67 cent drop since two weeks ago, but analyst Jan Lundberg says the increase should be short lived and prices will likely fall again as the driving season continues.

Lewis says cuts may avoid taxes in Texas budget

Speaker Gib Lewis says a package of spending cuts targeting education and state services could allow lawmakers to return home without a tax increase. The plan would trim about 600 million in 1987 spending, erase a 3 percent state employee pay raise, and faces a final committee vote before possible floor action.

Protests damage border business in Ciudad Juarez

In Ciudad Juarez, bridges to El Paso remained open but days of protest left lingering harm to local merchants. Leather shop owner Felix Cano said the season was lost as PAN supporters ended a six day bridge blockade. The unrest followed July 6 elections with PAN accusing PRI of vote fraud.

Odessa utilities prepare for summer demands

Odessa utilities officials say water and electricity will be ample this summer. Utilities director Bob Derrington and Justin Johnson of Texas Electric Service Co. note storage tanks and a water treatment upgrade will raise capacity to 55 million gallons daily. Odessans use about 36 million gallons daily in summer, dropping to 16 million in winter.
