Texas approves historic tax cut by wide margin
Texas voters pass Proposition 1 by 94 percent to 6 percent in a special constitutional election. The measure raises the school property tax exemption to 15000 dollars from 5000, trims monthly bills about 12 dollars for most homeowners, and lets seniors transfer a tax freeze to a new home. Governor Bush hailed the mandate as a win for addressing basic needs and urged turnout despite low election participation.

Odessa College seeks public input on tax rate stay
Odessa College board proposes holding taxes at 19.84 cents per 100 of value. A public hearing is planned at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the OC Community Room. If unchanged, local taxes would total about 7.74 million, about 7 percent more than last year, due to higher assessed values and the current rate exceeding this year’s effective rate by over 3 percent. Owners of mineral properties will be affected.
