Father’s Frustration Sparks Reversal Of Roles In Modern Tale
Night News Wire reviews Robert Miner’s novel about Matthew Vole, a graduate student and bank clerk in Connecticut who becomes a reluctant mother figure to his two young children. As his wife Cindy pursues a city career, Matthew’s temper and desperate search for support lead him to affair and chaotic domestic scenes. Critics note the book’s stark depiction of the pressures of single parenthood and the alleged conspiracy of silence around motherhood. The portrayal provokes debate over gender roles, parenting, and the politics of modern family life.
