Odessa asks for a special audit of the states sales tax rebate for June retail sales after the citys share fell short. Fiscal Services Manager Frank Muser said the state mailed a 587495 rebate check to Odessa.
The city requests a special audit after a sharp drop in the June rebate of state sales tax revenue, citing unexpected shortfall and potential impact on local finances.
The bulletin lists year-to-date figures with the 85 and 86 totals. It shows 587,495 and 906,147 in dollars and mentions a 466 million figure for the emanaras item.
DPS Director Jim Adams warned that Appropriations Committee budget cuts, though smaller than first proposed, would seriously hinder patrols and could raise traffic fatalities across Texas.
In the special budget balancing session in Austin both chambers adjourned until Monday with the Senate at 11 30 a m and the House at 2 p m. Gov. Mark White offered a third plan in his opening remarks as tensions between Senate Lt Gov Bill Hobby and House Speaker Gib Lewis remained high despite public show of unity.
Odessa Police Chief Alan Stewart offered no comment beyond a prepared statement on the suspension with pay of Kenneth R. Jones a 21 year veteran. The chief cited an internal investigation and said more information would be released later. Jones was suspended after being subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury in Midland. A deputy chief 47 was temporarily removed after Jones faced the probe for alleged criminal mischief in May. City Manager Harrison likewise declined to comment stating it is a personnel matter. The piece notes past investigations of two Odessa policemen since 1985 including Lt. Jerry Don Smith suspended over a car crash and insurance violations.
The Ector County Odessa Animal Shelter begins a doggie drop night deposit to accept pets after hours, reducing worker hours. Shelter officials report prior methods caused animals to be chucked over fences or placed in trailers, with Tammy White noting the change.
