Judge rules blood transfusions for premature baby in Fort Worth
A Texas judge authorized John Peter Smith Hospital doctors to give blood transfusions to 12 week premature infant Derek Salone after his Jehovah's Witness mother and grandmother refused the procedure despite a life threatening lung condition. The emergency hearing in Fort Worth cited hyaline membrane disease as the baby's ailment.

State denies Bell rate hike request in Texas
The Texas utility commission examiner ruled against Southwestern Bell's bid to raise the basic home service charge by 60 to 82 percent starting October 31. The four page decision, issued Monday by hearing examiner Jacqueline Holmes, rejected Bell's request to further hike rates beyond the initial proposal.
Phone rate hike case to be heard on merits

Odessa banks report declines in loans deposits and assets
Odessa's nine banks posted lower loan totals deposits and total assets for the quarter ending June 30 compared with the previous quarter and last year.
