Researching Biology Grad Students At UTPB This Summer
Graduate students in the biology department at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin continue year round research on NIH grants and desert ecology. Bryan Smith assists Doug Henderson on growing bacteria to harvest hemoglobin for a blood substitute, using a bioreactor and phosphate adjustments. Kristin Bingham studies La Junta de los Rios and Big Bend Ranch habitat contrasts, planning further soil data collection and ecological discussions. Brandon Hawkins researches Southern Plains wood rats, linking ecology and physiology to wildland urban interfaces and predicting pathology, with collaborations at Utah and New Mexico. The trio plans to finish master’s theses and pursue Ph D programs while publishing in future journals.
