Power plants beat summer heat across the nation
Through nine days of 90 plus degree heat, air conditioners ran nationwide while California faced only brief outages from brush fires. The North American Electric Reliability Council says adequate power with 15 to 30 percent reserves covers most areas as new plants add nearly 10,000 megawatts. California reports 4,300 megawatts online this summer, with hydropower and other plants easing demand. Officials cite conservation and market oversight since past shortages, and grid managers from Midwest to Northeast report continued reliability amid record demand.
