Soviet missile ruse fails to fool U S officials
Washington AP reports a congressional intelligence expert says the Soviet Union tried to mislead U S intelligence by altering impact craters on SS-19 missiles. Photographs from Kamchatka in March 1979 showed troops filling craters to appear less accurate. Soviets later masked missile performance and blocked test transmissions. The SS-19 is a six warhead MIRV ICBM with about 360 deployed.
