End of Price Controls Could Lift Food Costs Sharp
The end of price controls may push retail food prices 20 percent above the 1972 level over a 12 month period, with further rises possible depending on Phase 4 and wage-price actions. Projections note record crops but rising demand and exports may offset gains, while beef supplies dwindle and wheat prices jump. The Cost of Living Council imposes rules post-freeze, requiring advance notice for large firms and possible veto power, with price hikes not to exceed higher costs and timing set to no earlier than September 12.
