DOE seeks sites for mercury storage near Andrews in hearings
Energy department reps held public meetings at the James Roberts Center as it sifts seven sites for a federally mandated mercury storage facility. Waste Control Specialists near Andrews would house the mercury in modular 150000 square foot space, with up to 10000 metric tons over 40 years in 76 pound flasks and one metric ton containers. Public concerns include groundwater risk to the Ogallala aquifer and economic impact on local communities while officials plan an environmental impact statement due next summer and a final decision in fall 2010.
