Medical Center Hospital attracts federal disproportionate share funds due to indigent patients. In a matching formula the hospital district pays 1 and the federal government matches 1.61, effectively yielding 2.61 back per dollar. To maximize returns, the district joined a coalition of eight hospitals to pay matching funds, potentially turning $205 million into $525 million with $325 million from the government.
