Balloon pilot with DUI past linked to deadly Texas crash
The hot air balloon pilot Alfred Nichols who died in the Lockhart crash had four DUI convictions in Missouri and spent time in prison. Investigators noted no clear link between drinking and the crash, while authorities and FAA safety experts discussed regulatory gaps for balloon pilots and medical reporting requirements. Nichols previously faced customer complaints over canceled rides and refunds, and had moved his operations from Missouri to Texas to continue flying.
