Expedition off North Carolina coast seeks to unlock coral beds secrets
Aboard the Ry Seward Johnson, UNC Wilmington researcher Steve Ross leads 17 scientists in a two week mid June Deep water coral study from Florida to North Carolina. They use submersibles to map, photograph and sample coral beds to learn how deep water life interacts with surface ecosystems and how this affects fisheries and energy projects. The project aims to establish baseline data on deep sea habitats and emphasize conservation as exploration expands globally.
