Cuban handyman seeks freedom after seven day sea voyage
Ramon Estevez Cordova, 27, pulled from the sea near the Florida Keys, recalls using two inner tubes as a raft, paddled with ping pong paddles, dodged sharks and Cuban navy patrols during a 90 mile journey to reach the United States. Rescued by a pleasure boat off Key Largo, he was reunited with his foster sister Sonia Batista in Miami, crying at the sight of the American flag and declaring his escape from Havana. He endured hunger and seaweed meals, and feared German ships, preferring an American arrival.
