Little Town Becomes Home to 14 Insurance Companies

Hawkins Texas, population 493, hosts 14 insurance firms with about 3 million dollars in assets. American National Insurance Co. managers set up the companies to minimize ad valorem taxes, locating home offices in Hawkins while executive operations run from Dallas. The state license renewals for all 14 Hawkins insurers were approved, listing Bay Life, Crown, Farm and Home Life, First Security Life, Guaranty Life, and others.

John Gilbert Graham presented two confessions claiming he planted 25 sticks of dynamite in a timebomb aboard a United Air Lines flight last November killing 44. He alleges an accomplice “Karl” helped assemble the device and that he spoke under FBI pressure when making the written and oral statements. The jury is to decide the death penalty under Colorado law requiring a confession or eyewitness testimony.

Hail, Rain, Winds And Dust Hit State

Tornado alert in North-Central Texas from Wichita Falls to Mineral Wells area. Hail as large as tennis balls damaged some cars, with 10 inch stones elsewhere but not in the business district. Dust reduced visibility at Amarillo and Wink. No major utility damage reported.

Twin Boys Found Dead In Bedroom in Texas Home

Two one month old twin boys named Roland and Richard Simonson were found dead in their beds Saturday afternoon in Waco Texas. Authorities said the gas stove in the boys room was burning full blast but the cause of death is not yet known. Autopsies were ordered. The boys were discovered by their mother who had been ironing in another room.

Two Dallas men Charles M. Vining aged 57 and Henry Brunner aged 47 were killed when their car left U S 77 and overturned 20 miles south of Victoria Texas on a Saturday. Injured were Gerald B. Vining 34 D H Coomb 24 and E D Holder 41 holder from Irving Texas.

Kirklin files for re election in District 103

State representative W G Cotton Kirklin announces his candidacy for a third term from District 103 which includes Ector and Winkler Counties. The cotton farmer and legislator has served as vice chair of the Revenue and Taxation Committee and on State Affairs Veterans Affairs and Motor Traffic. He lists ongoing work with the Legislative Council and cites no announced opponent. Kirklin, of Odessa, lives at 1313 North Amburger with his wife Opal and two sons Layton and Donald Frank. He is a Baylor graduate and active in the First Christian Church Odessa Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club.

Vet Land Fraud Figure Jailed

Austin April 28 AUSTIN Texas moved further in its battle against veterans land program violations under Bascom Giles. J. McLarty a 38 year old business executive was jailed at Jourdanton after a jury sentenced him to four years for an illegal money making transaction in 1952. Giles was the first to go to jail on felony charges in the multi million dollar program and civil suits have netted 702988 dollars.

Fireline Halted Big Forest Fire in Lincoln National Forest

A seven mile fireline held Saturday night keeping one of Lincoln National Forests worst blazes in check. About 1,150 firefighters hoped to hold the fire with winds feared to rise, while an aerial survey revised burned timber to 8,000 to 10,000 acres though the total area reached over 15,000 acres with skip areas. Winds at 30 mph. Sacramento village near the fire was stopped by a canyon fireline late Friday.

Houston life insurance salesman D. L. Jennings, 26, was drowned when a fishing skiff struck a submerged object in Lake Houston on Saturday, throwing him and a companion into the water.

London April 28 AP The five power disarmament talks appeared to fizz le as no agreement emerged. Despite proposals from the United States Soviet Union Britain and France, progress was lacking and the conference adjourned to Wednesday with Canada as the fifth member.
