Odessa officials seek an easement to allow Ector County to improve a private road to the Penwell FutureGen site. If granted, the county would blade and surface an oilfield road in two phases, with caliche already pledged and costs mainly for labor and fuel. County Judge Jerry D. Caddel said work hinges on securing the easement.
Candidates David Dunn and Mark Darville challenged incumbents Mary Thompson and Bill Hetzler at a public forum in the MCH boardroom. They discussed budgeting amid federal cuts and basin experience. Dunn noted service on Odessa College board during financial trouble while Hetzler touted hospital growth from prairie origins serving 17 counties.
A trio of blasts hit the Sinai resort town of Dahab on Monday evening killing at least 23 people and wounding over 60 as crowds of tourists gathered for Easter weekend and Shem al-Nessim. Among the dead were 18 Egyptians, plus a Russian and a Swiss. The Al Capone restaurant was destroyed and witnesses described chaotic scenes as authorities confirmed 62 injuries.
The Texas House debated Gov. Rick Perry’s proposed business tax expansion to fund schools. The plan would boost funding via an expanded business tax, a $1 cigarette tax increase, and surplus money to provide property owners an initial one third tax break. Rep. Jim Keffer supported Perry’s plan, calling it exceptional as lawmakers moved toward a vote, with further details on Page 8A.
