Tax audits shift to poorer Americans says TRAC report
Syracuse AP reports that IRS audit rates rose for low income taxpayers in 1999 while the rate for those earning $100,000 or more fell to 1.15 percent. Excluding EITC and nonfiler cases, low income audits drop to 0.17 percent, vs 1.08 percent for higher income earners.
