John W Young Seen as Epitome of Nowhero for Shuttle Era
James A. Michener profiles John W Young, future shuttle commander, detailing his experience, discipline, and readiness. The piece notes Young’s four spaceflights totaling 533 hours, his leadership on missions, and the immense preparation behind piloting the shuttle. It contrasts his calm, studious nature with a wary view of Soviet progress and the global race to manned spaceflight.
