Indian Fair and Carnival Set to Surpass All

Preparations are underway for the Indian fair and carnival from the 22nd to the 24th. Joseph Bigboy leads the event with expectations of participants from every reservation and a parade of Indians in costume to attract travelers. Organizers Everest Farmers Dean and Rakes promise record exhibits, stronger livestock displays, and top sports, aiming for the Northwest’s biggest event this year with at least 600 Indians expected to participate.

Popular couple weds at Blueberry Wisconsin

Edward Dennis of this village and Muss Myrtle Genreau of Superior Wisconsin united in marriage at the bride’s parents home in Blueberry Wisconsin last Monday morning. The couple is well known here and greatly esteemed with many friends present and numerous gifts. A sumptuous meal followed the ceremony. The Star extends congratulations. A farewell beach party honors Blanche Sero departing for the Villa College for Girls in Duluth Minnesota.

Doing Nicely After Appendectomy In Ashland

James Bungo who had an operation at St Josephs hospital in Ashland for appendicitis several weeks ago is reported doing nicely. This is welcome news to his many friends in the village. Local woman Charlotte Currant dies after ingesting poison

Last Saturday afternoon 27 year old Charlotte Currant of this village committed suicide at her home by drinking liniment. She had been in Ashland that morning and returned at noon. Andrew Knudson alerted others, Rev Halliday and Dr Sincock attended but she died in great agony. Despondency was given as the cause. Burial followed from the Catholic Church with interment in the Catholic cemetery.

Stearns Lumber Mill to Close for Repairs This Fall

The Stearns Lumber Company will shut down its mill on October 1 for six weeks to repair the hot pond and conduct maintenance. The period will also allow preparations for future tribal timber cutting. The firm notes good past performance despite a weak lumber market and expects renewed output after repairs pleasing local citizens.

School Notes From Local District Report

A special recitation room has been erected for Miss Phillips and her pupils. The boys of the high school plan an afternoon to fix up the school grounds for a ball park. Miss Carlson has new windows. the janitor is Mr. Olson. Total pupils 121 with grades distributed 1st 14, 2nd 20, 3rd 1, 4th 14, 5th 75, 6th 12, 7th 16, 8th 5, 9th 8, 10th 7. All notes are written by the English class this year.

Indians Reinforce Rights in Kakagon Slough Fishing Case

Indian police raided Kakagon sloughs last Sunday capturing numerous fish violators and confiscating gear. The Ashland Press editorialized against Indian rights but the treaty protections remain in force, with violators released under warning and prior state actions cited in support of treaty enforcement.

Allotting Agent to Start Lands Assignment This Week

Indian Agent P. S. Everest reports Charles E. Redfield will arrive from the east to supervise land allotment on the reservation. The plan is to complete the process in early December by assigning roughly sixty acres per member, grouping families where possible. Distribution of money may occur earlier, and road funding is urged to aid development as land questions close.

Odanah Makes Doubleheader Sweep Over Mellen

Odanah won both ends of a postponed doubleheader against Mellen last Sunday. Cy Dahlgren, Doc Stanley and Meilen led a strong effort as Odanah piled up runs with timely hitting and forceful defense. An incident followed Ed Dennis being hit in the mouth by a Dahlgren shot, McBride replacing him at second.

Braves Take Twin Bill 5-4 in Close Local Baseball Twinbill

In the first game Mellen led with a homer and two more hits while tight infield play kept Mellen down. Newagon’s solid defense and Newagon’s overall play highlighted the Braves doubleheader. In the second game James started pitching for the Braves but struggled. J Grant relieved and shut the visitors down as the Braves won 5-4 after a late surge, with Newagon scoring on a 6th inning squeeze play.

John C. Bressette aged 19, son of Chas Bressette, died this week of tuberculosis. Funeral held at the Catholic church in the village.
