A liner Volturno burns at sea causing 146 deaths with Carmania and rescue ships rushing to aid the doomed vessel. Dozens of other vessels converge to rescue survivors and assist injured passengers.
On the Volturno fire, 146 passengers and crew perished as rescue ships led by the Carmania fought head winds to reach the burning liner. Lifeboats proved insufficient with 521 saved from nine ships. the ship carried 560 passengers and 93 crew, with most deaths caused by burns and collapsing wreckage.
More than 5,000 delegates from street railway firms across the nation attend the American Electric Railways convention in Atlantic City New Jersey. The agenda includes a profit sharing plan for employees and discussions on street railway conditions in Cleveland and Detroit.

Afton Wisconsin cyclone wrecked two farmhouses and four barns injuring four people at Afton seven miles north of Beloit. In North Dakota near Berthold two men died and one was injured when lightning struck a barn on John Engebreton's farm killing nine horses. A Nebraska tornado near ONeill killed three people and caused extensive damage to the Clark Lewis and Farewell families with multiple injuries.
Hurley Wisconsin Oct 15 Two men from Saxon Robert Gill and Joseph Le Gendre were arrested on arson charges and jailed here awaiting preliminary hearings. State fire marshals say the pair caused fires over two years destroying property valued at $100000.
The Supreme court convened for its fall term, adjourned, and paid its customary visit to President Wilson at the White House. Next Monday will be the first decision day.

Fifteen year old Robbie Crawford, who rode his bicycle in front of President Wilson's car, received a new wheel as a gift from the president in Washington.
Former New York lieutenant governor Timothy L Woodruff died in his apartments after a long coma. He collapsed during a speech he gave in support of the Progressive party after leaving the Republicans. He was 55, survived by his second wife Isabel Morrison and son John.
The Athletics defeated the Giants 3 to 1 at Polo Grounds to clinch the world series title. Plank starred for Philadelphia while Mathewson delivered his best effort, but could not avert defeat. Philadelphia earned the championship and the largest share of receipts after four wins to Giants one.
