Ashland liquor saloon facing license hearing action

Octave ey, operator of a saloon in Ashland, faced a formal hearing by the city commission after two Washburn youths testified they were served drinks at the establishment. They claimed beer and whiskey were sold to them though the saloonkeeper argued the age of patrons. The commission will render a decision at its next meeting, amid calls for stricter enforcement.

Ennis Sullivan Faces Second Operation After Cancer Treatment

Ennis Sullivan of Ashland Dye Works visits the village to see friends after undergoing cancer surgery in Rochester at Mayo Brothers. A large piece was removed from his lower lip, with a second operation planned on December 7 to begin a lifting procedure. He is pronounced cancer free and will stay there this time.

Marshal Pugh Picks Up Offenders Across Villages

U S Marshal Pugh visited the village this week arresting offenders and serving warrants. He confined his work to Bayfield and Ashland as well where in Ashland 15 saloonkeepers faced action. In Bayfield a large number were served and in Ashland 15 were arrested for selling liquor to Indians with potential fines and jail terms.

16 Year Old Boy Shot In Wisconsin

Leo Mrotek aged 16, son of C Mrotek of Coriss Wisconsin, was shot in the side while hunting last Monday. The gun slipped from a stump and discharged the charge tore a hole in his left side, with shot and wad expelled. Both left fingers and thumb were blown off as the weapon fired. He formerly lived in Ashland and is a nephew of Joe Mrotek.

School Notes Lets Seventh and Eighth Grade Enjoy Half Holidays

Students in seventh and eighth grades received surprise half holidays as the church bequeathed funds for mornings this week. A Basket social Monday evening raised funds with the lunch auctioned by J. McFlrone. The program highlighted classroom work and talks by high school pupils on forestry, fires, corn growing, and good roads, with net proceeds near twenty five dollars to benefit the schools.

Kazan Wins Lightweight Wrestling Match at Empire Theatre

Alex Kazan of Butternut defeated Gus Wahlstrom in a two fall match on November 7 at the Empire theatre. Kazan won the first fall in 1 hour 20 minutes with a head scissors and hammer lock, then secured the match after Wahlstrom yielded in the second period. Referee Carl Mess called it among the best he had seen. About 250 spectators, including fans from Park Falls and Ashland, watched as Kazan’s father, though not engaged, looked on.

Starrs Lease Village Billiard Hall From James M. Scott

A. G. Starr and J. O. Starr have leased the village billiard hall from James M. Scott and will run the business. Antoine Starr is noted as a famed ball player and the partners are well regarded by locals with many wishing them success and anticipating the venture. Scott plans to relocate west and leaves behind a circle of friends who regret the closing of Jim Scott’s establishment.

Chief Cadreau Seeks Release From Saskatoon Ball Club

Chief Cadreau well known in the district and home in town applied last week to the Saskatoon ball club in the Canadian League for his release but they refused to consider it. Green Bay in the WI League wants Cadreau and it is expected he will join next season in a Green Bay uniform after his suspension from the Canadian League. He pitched sensationally for our team in a recent game striking out 21 and seven innings later recorded 14 strikeouts against a Northern league barnstorming team. He is taking good care of himself and should perform well next season possibly in big league company.
