Village Celebration Draws Large Crowd and Notable Accidents

A village celebration held last Monday drew a large audience with Rev. J. W. Halliday delivering an ovation and Frank Hook reading the Declaration of Independence. Events included numerous races, a boat race, log rolling, and a baseball exhibition. a horse-race accident injured Ed Walker but no deaths occurred.

Lac Court Oreilles region noted for ancient Chippewa life

Interior Department probe targets liquor to Indians in L Anse

Assistant Attorney General James A. Greene arrived in L Anse to examine charges by Clarence T. Johnson that several citizens and officials furnished liquor to Indians to sway votes in the spring election. He heard both sides, plans to report findings to Governor Ferris and Attorney General Fellows, and warned that saloon closure may follow under treaty laws.

Prisoners Taken To Superior For Liquor Offenses On Reservation

U S Deputy Marshal arrived in the village and seized a large batch of offenders for introducing liquor on the reservation. They were sent to Superior for trial next Tuesday. Names include Pat Lagrew Sam Roy Leo Olson Frank Sharlow and others. Attorney Frank Lamorieux will defend several accused.
