A Detroit volunteer, Henry H. Norrington of Detroit, risked his life to relay critical orders after a Confederate hold on Cheat Mountain. Crawling miles on hands and knees, he carried despatches to Gen Reynolds and returned through enemy fire, then rode away with a captured horse to safety. For bravery he was promoted, given a sword and revolver, and celebrated by the unit.
