Wm. H. Parham, Noted AmongColored People, PassesAway.SERVES IN LEGISLATUREeased Was the First of To Enter General Assembly of Ohio.William H. Parham, one of the best-known colored residents of the city, died yesterday at his home, 1240 Chapel street, Walnut Hills, of heart trouble. He had been 111 for four weeks.Came Here in 1860.Mr. Parham was born in Virginia, September 15, 1841. He spent the early part of his life in Philadelphia, andcame to th.s city when he was 16 years old.In 1860 he began life as a teacher, and in 1866 was elected Superintendentof the colored schools, a position he filled until 1876.After the abolishing of the colored School Board he was made principal of the colored schools. In 1887 he wasmade principal of the Gaines HighSchool, then located in Court street, west of John street.First Colored Graduate.In 1890 he resigned as principal of the school and entered into the practice of law. He tvas the first colored man to graduate from the Cincinnati Law School, and also the first colored man to become a notary in the State of OhhfcHe was the first colored man nominated for the Legislature in this State, but at that time he refused to accept. Later, pressure was brought to beai and in 1901 and 1902 he served in the Legislature as the first colored memberfrom Ohio.He was instrumental in securing the passage of several bills of great interest to the colored people of the State.Prominent Fraternity Man.He wae a prominent Mason, and at the time of his death was engaged in writing a history of colored Masonry.He was a trustee of the Crawford Old Men’s Home and one of the trustees of the Colored American Cemetery. For several years he was one of the trustees of the Colored Orphan Asylum.
