Assassination of Chicago Mayor Harrison
Chicago chief executive Carter H. Harrison shot dead at his home by paper carrier Eugene Patrick Prendergast. After firing three shots he walked toward the dining room and died about half an hour later. Prendergast surrendered at Des Plaines street station claiming the mayor had promised to appoint him corporation counsel and failed to keep his word. Mass funeral rites followed with a thousand details of the procession and officials accompanying the cortege to Graceland cemetery.
