Washington May 24 The Presbyterian general assembly has turned into a judicial court to begin the Briggs case. Dr Briggs sits under attendent scrutiny as the report favors immediate trial. The assembly, crowded with dignitaries, hears the ruling to proceed under to govern procedures and adjourns for the appeal filings.
Minnesota commissioners split bids for a state elevator site from Duluth with prices ranging from 5 000 to 62 600 dollars. A site is to be chosen next week, with construction bids to follow after plans are prepared. Treasury funds exist to secure a site and possibly advance money via a trust company, though current opinion blocks direct state draws for construction.
Cutcaco May 24 Sunday opening carried the day in the national commission after a spirited debate. Members and spectators filled the rooms as the majority report for Sunday opening faced opposition from Massey and other supporters of closing the fair. The commission allowed the local directory to decide, leaving the gate opening to the local board unless judiciary action intervenes.
The first general congress of the public press in Columbia opens with papers on press relations to politics, current events, and journalism ethics. Speakers include Colonel A. K. McClure and Mrs. Elizabeth Bisland Wetmore, among others.
May 22 Lake City Michigan reports a deadly blaze at Louis Band's lumber camp three miles northeast of town. Ten men are named among the dead or missing including Michael Galen Charles Taylor James King Edward Rorabacker Samuel Campbell and Fred Sagiit. A rescuing party recovered bodies from a well as winds blocked escapes. A separate Saginaw fire caused $1.5 million in damage destroying 300 buildings and leaving many homeless.
A cyclone at Cleveland Rolling Mills caused the steel cupola to collapse, killing two workers. One Italian man crushed by a beam, Tommy McGuire fatally injured, and another man severely injured but to recover. The cupola wrecked and extensive damage reported. In Louisville, a tornado leveled twenty five eastern houses at 4 a.m. with no deaths and property losses estimated between 25,996 and 90,000.
Market turmoil and price quotes across cattle hogs and sheep at the St Paul Union Stock Yards and Chicago markets. Beef cattle demand weak while hogs show strength and grain futures move with July and September openings and closings across wheat corn oats with noted prices and receipts.
